In order to succeed at that game, you have to shift gears and think of your career as a power game, which some people do all the time. But you didn’t want to shift gears. So there was no way to win at that game.”

It must have been for the best, I told Tom, because there has not been a day since leaving the NIMH that I have woken up and wished I were back there. He agreed, adding, “The place I had worked in ceased to exist, and that made it easier to leave. I didn’t like the place it had become.”
